Blogging Your Doing It, But Nothing Is Happening

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Blogging: Your Doing It, But Nothing is Happening Years ago, I coached a lawyer who was writing an ERISA Law Blog. In one of our coaching sessions he explained. I enjoy writing the blog, but my target clients are not finding it. The only calls I have received are from employees. I looked at the blog. At the time he was essentially reporting the ERISA news. I couldn’t tell from his posts that he represented employers. He had not targeted his readers and picked topics he hoped would bring them to him. As some of you know, I began writing a column in Roads and Bridges magazine in the early 80s. I purposely named the column: Law: The Contractor’s Side. Here is a column I wrote in 2000:  The ‘ripple effect’ of change orders. My target readers were contractors and in the linked column I wanted to demonstrate my understanding and expertise of the ripple effect of change orders in the hope I would be top of mind if a contractor faced that issue. Writing strategically to reach and intended target reader is one topic I will address in a webinar I am presenting on August 25 for MyCase. The title is Build Your Practice Through Blogging. Click on the title and you can sign up for it. If you are a blogger and don’t feel your posts are attracting clients or referral sources, I urge you to take the hour on the 25th and learn how to  start blogging more strategically and take a look at my Social Media Blogging eBook. I tell lawyers I coach that with each blog, they should: Ok, once you have figured out those things, you are ready to draft. Start with a great, “google searchable” headline. You want to choose one that potential clients will find if they did a search of the legal topic. Second, write a great first line. Think like a journalist. Don’t bury the lead. Third, write short paragraphs. You want to have a lot of white space to make your blog easy to read on line. Fourth, include a visual. There are many places where you can find free photographs that do not require attribution. One source I use is Pexels. When you finish your first draft, look and see if you can shorten the post. Take out any fluff or unnecessary words. After you post your blog, use Buffer  or Hootsuite to deliver it to your social media sites at the time you think would be most likely read. (I say around 1-2 in the afternoon Central Time is not bad.) If you want to learn more about getting readers to your blog, I found:  39 Top Bloggers Reveal How They Get More Blog Traffic. Which one do you think would get you potential clients and referral sources readers? I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

A Five Step Year In Review Are You Building A Successful Engineer Career

Engineering Management Institute A Five Step Year in Review: Are You Building a Successful Engineer Career? in your profession: how precisely are you measuring whether or not you are constructing a successful engineering career? In this publish, I want to share with you some methods you could measure your success as an engineer, and also get some feedback from you on how you've been doing it. #1 Define/Review Your Success Definition It is completely unimaginable to measure how profitable you had been this past yr as an engineer should you don’t have a clear picture or definition of what “success” appears like. When I say “definition,” I mean make it as specific as potential. Seriously, we’re engineers, we have specs for every thing, why not have one for a successful engineering career? For functions of this post, let’s use a pattern and say: “A profitable engineering career to me is one in which I am a frontrunner in both my engineering agency and my neighborhood.” I know this may nonetheless be somewhat imprecise, but so long as you possibly can measure it, it will work. So let’s speak about measuring success…. #2 Identify the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Success in your Engineering Career Okay so on this instance, I have outlined a successful engineering career as one during which I am a pacesetter in both my engineering agency and my neighborhood. Now I wish to decide some key efficiency indicators that can assist me to establish where I am on the trail to success. Here are some tangible ones that come to mind: I will cease there for this instance, but what I am looking for right here with KPIs are measurable metrics that help me determine if I am profitable (as I define success), as a result of if I am not, then what’s the point, proper? The KPIs I even have selected here, will help to finally measure the influence that I am having in my firm and on my community and I am defining a pacesetter as somebody who can have a giant positive influence. If you need to learn extra about KPIs, take a look at Chris’ article from this previous May on using key performance indicators to handle your career and life . #three Develop a Method for Measuring your KPIs Next I would arrange a spreadsheet of some sort (hey, I am an engineer what did you anticipate?!) to measure these KPIs. I would put the KPIs within the rows of the spreadsheet and have a column for each month within the yr. This will allow me, in just a matter of minutes as soon as a per month, to assess the KPIs. Some of these might be tough to measure, for instance the variety of folks I impact via my projects. Let’s say you're managing the design for a bridge, and that bridge facilitates 10,000 folks driving to work daily, you then might contemplate the impact of that project to be affecting 10,000 folks. Then if you add a second project of that magnitude to your duties, you are now impacting 20,000 individuals, thus growing your level of success, based on your definition. I even have additionally included salary here, as a result of sometimes, the extra obligations you have, the higher the wage, although that is not at all times the case. #4 Measure your KPI’s Monthly This step is simple, but of course not always done as we get busy and overlook to measure. If you have followed the previous steps, then this step should be simply filling in your spreadsheet or measurement dashboard. Doing this month-to-month will give you an incredible measurement device for constructing a successful engineering career over time. #5 Make Adjustments making adjustments moving forward. For instance, when you notice you have managed the same number of individuals, and have had just about the identical salary over 2 years, one thing should be mistaken. You should have a dialog together with your engineering supervisor and find out why you are not progressing in these areas. Maybe you should adjust your management style. Maybe your tasks haven’t been successful so you haven’t been given extra obligations. Then you possibly can dig deeper on this issue. There is completely no reason for measuring, if you're not going to make changes based in your measurements. Please Share Your Engineering Career Success Definition Please go away your feedback on the bottom of this publish, and if comfortable go away your definition of success as an engineer, and the way you measure it. Let’s get some dialog going that can allow you to reflect, and make next year a really successful yr in your engineering career.
